Day 1: ‘Buongiorno’ from the Largest Island in the Mediterranean
Through the island’s capital city of Palermo, we reach by train our first destination, Cefalu. This coastal town is one of Sicily’s most popular destinations. Despite its size, every year Cefalu attracts millions of tourists from all over Italy and elsewhere in Europe. Cefalu serves as a great first impression of a week-long tour.
Note we will pick you up from the airport or port in Palermo.
Day 2: A Charming Town Filled with Street Life Followed by a Secluded Natural Attraction
Before relocating by train to the hilltop town of Agrigento, we are provided with a guided tour in Cefalu. The town’s architecture, restaurants and vibrant street scene never fail to excite. In the later part of the day, we take a train to Agrigento. After checking into the hotel, we are taken by a private vehicle to a nearby rocky white cliff called Scala dei Turchi. There we swim in clear water.
Day 3: The Greeks Leaving Their Permanent Mark Here
Before relocating by train to the coastal city of Catania, we are provided with a guided tour at Agrigento’s most famous attraction, the Valley of the Temples. This is one of the most outstanding examples of ‘Magna Graecia’ art and architecture. This area was populated by Greek settlers. These settlers, who began arriving in the 8th century BC, brought with them their Hellenic civilization. This left a lasting imprint on the culture of ancient Rome. The Greek settlers also influenced the natives, who quickly adopted the Greek culture as their own. Many locals in this area speak Greek until this very day
Day 4: Europe's Most Active Stratovolcano & a Traditional Dinner with Mama
As a daytrip from Catania, we are taken by coach to the tallest active volcano in Europe. Mount Etna’s current height is 3,357 meters (11,014 feet). This is also one of the world's most active volcanoes. Mount Etna is in an almost constant state of activity. The fertile volcanic soils support extensive agriculture, with vineyards and orchards spread across the lower slopes of the mountain. In June 2013, Mount Etna was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The evening ends with a cooking class at a local’s home followed by having dinner together.
Day 5: An Entire Town Listed as a World Heritage Site
We make a daytrip by train from Catania to a 2,700-year-old town called Syracuse. Notable for its rich Greek and Roman history, culture, amphitheaters and architecture, Syracuse is best explored by foot with a private tour guide. Once the largest city in the ancient world, today Syracuse is one of Sicily’s most authentic destinations. Since 2005, the entire town was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Day 6: Sicily’s Oldest Tourist Destination Perched on a Cliff Overlooking the Ionian Sea
Today we make a daytrip by train from Catania to Taormina. This coastal town has been a tourist destination since the 19th century. After the Italian unification, Taormina began to attract well-off tourists from Northern Europe. Taormina quickly became a welcoming haven for artists. This town is perched on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea. Besides the ancient Greek theatre, Taormina has many old churches, lively bars, fine restaurants and antique shops.
